Does electrolysis permanently remove hair?

Yes. Electrolysis is FDA approved method of permanent hair removal. During treatment, a very fine probe is inserted into the natural opening of the hair follicle. A small amount of electrical energy is used to destroy the follicle's ability to produce hair. Once a hair follicle has been successfully treated, it cannot produce another hair.​

Does electrolysis hurt?

Everyone experiences electrolysis a little differently. Most clients describe the sensation as a quick pinch, warmth, or tiny stinging feeling as each follicle is treated. Sensitivity can vary depending on the area being treated, the individual's pain tolerance, and the type and density of hair. We work with each client to make the treatment as comfortable as possible.

How many electrolysis treatments will I need?

The number of treatments varies from person to person. Factors include the amount and density of hair, the treatment area, hair growth patterns, hormones, and how consistently appointments are scheduled.

Because hair grows in different cycles, not every hair is treatable at the same time. Multiple appointments are necessary to catch hairs as they enter the appropriate growth stage. Consistent treatments over time are the key to achieving permanent results.

How long does an electrolysis appointment take?

Electrolysis appointments can be customized to your needs and schedule. Treatment may range from a short appointment for a small area to longer sessions for areas with more hair.

The amount of time needed depends on the size of the area and the number of hairs being treated. Your electrologist can help determine an appointment schedule that works best for you.

Can electrolysis remove blonde, gray, white, or red hair?

Yes! This is one of the biggest advantages of electrolysis.

Unlike laser hair removal, electrolysis does not depend on the color of the hair. Because each individual hair follicle is treated directly, electrolysis can permanently remove blonde, gray, white, red, and dark hairs.

This makes electrolysis an excellent option for hairs that don't respond well to laser hair removal.

Is electrolysis safe for my skin?

When performed properly by a licensed and trained electrologist, electrolysis is considered a safe method of permanent hair removal. A temporary amount of redness or slight swelling around the treated follicles is normal and generally subsides relatively quickly.

Following your electrologist's aftercare instructions is important for minimizing irritation and helping your skin recover properly.

Can electrolysis be used on my face?

Yes. Electrolysis is commonly used to remove unwanted facial hair. Popular treatment areas include the chin, upper lip, jawline, cheeks, neck, sideburns, and other small areas of the face.

Because electrolysis treats one follicle at a time, it is particularly well suited for facial areas where precision is important.

How does electrolysis compare to laser hair removal?

The biggest difference is how the two methods work.

Laser hair removal uses concentrated light to target pigment in the hair and is designed to provide long-term hair reduction. It generally works best on darker hair with sufficient pigment.

Electrolysis treats individual hair follicles using electrical energy and is the only FDA-recognized method of permanent hair removal. It can be used on all hair colors, including blonde, gray, white, and red.

For some clients, using laser hair removal first and electrolysis afterward can be an effective approach—using laser to reduce a larger amount of dark hair and electrolysis to permanently remove remaining or lighter hairs.

Can I shave or tweeze between electrolysis appointments?

Shaving is generally fine between appointments if you need to manage the hair while completing your treatment series. However, tweezing, waxing, threading, or other methods that pull the hair out by the root are generally discouraged.

When a hair is removed from the root, the electrologist cannot treat that follicle until the hair grows back. Allowing the hair to grow naturally between appointments makes it easier to treat the follicles consistently and stay on track toward your permanent hair-removal goal.

Why does electrolysis take multiple treatments if it is permanent?

This is one of the most common misconceptions about electrolysis. Permanent hair removal does not mean every hair is removed in a single appointment.

Hair follicles go through different stages of growth, and not every follicle is producing a visible hair at the same time. Electrolysis treats individual follicles when the hair is accessible for treatment. As additional hairs enter the appropriate growth stage, they can be treated during subsequent appointments.

Think of it as a process of progressively clearing the area, hair by hair. With consistent treatments, fewer and fewer hairs remain until the area reaches the desired level of permanent hair removal.

How long will it take?

Because it treats one hair at a time, it does take longer than laser. Session duration and number of session depends on your hair and the area. Sessions can be scheduled frequently, and it takes many sessions over a period of time to decrease then eliminate the hair.​

Should I do laser or electrolysis?

Electrolysis is a suitable choice for smaller areas, white hairs, and eyebrows. It is a great alternative for individuals who do not qualify for laser.
